I remember seeing this trailer sometime ago and thinking that this was either going to be terrible or quite brilliant - it's neither - but it's closer to brilliance than terrible. The conceit is simple - a bunch of high school friends video tape everything they do and celebrate when each of them loses their virginity, and eventually it gets down to one last guy: Matt. And so they take to following him around and watching his mis-adventures in an attempt to lose his virginity.
A lot of reviews I've read are really bagging on this film and I think it's a shame - I liked it a lot - I think that it did a lot of smart things - Matt didn't really want to do this stuff, so he remains morally centered while his idiot friends push him into situations that he knows he shouldn't be in. Also the sheer force of how much this kid has been screwed over his entire life also makes you want to root for him all the more. The film takes some really fun and interesting terms and intelligently interweaves social media in a way that makes sense for today's generation. Matt and his friends feel and act like teenagers more so than the majority of films about teenagers, so for that alone sets it above other teen sex comedies.
I was impressed by this film - I don't think it's perfect, and I think some of could have been done differently (had a hard time buying that some of these very attractive teen girls would be with these guys - sorry to say). Given that I'm sure a lot of this was improvised, this film was a recipe for disaster, but the cast and crew pulls it off extremely well. So if you were on the fence about seeing this, but like teen comedies, this is better than a lot of them and has some heart to boot.
