2048 - Thank You For Sharing
Man - it looks like I haven't watched anything this month, but I've actually been watching a bunch of stuff, but just in bits and pieces as I prep for my next film, so it's weird to write about stuff in that context. Although I feel like I've missed a few here. Apologies!
I wanted to see this 'cause I like the premise and the cast a lot. Josh Gad is a superstar in my mind. I love Mark Ruffalo but he looks creepy unshaven. I'm sorry to say, but that really weirded me out, that and his character's nonstop smile kind of grated at me in a way that was confusing because he's easily one of my favourite actors. I just had a hard time really getting into and caring about his character and story - same with Tim Robbins. Josh Gad stole the film for me, it could have easily been just about him and it would have worked well. So I like this, but didn't quite love it. Give it a whirl on netflix if you're curious - it's about sex addicts!

2005 - The Royal Tenenbaums
It’s been awhile since I’ve watched this. I think it’s still my favourite Wes Anderson film. I still need to see Moonrise Kingdom before I outwardly make that claim, but I think it’s the film that best balances his unique style and an honest human element. I feel that largely following this film he went into a bizarre direction that was almost too stylized and became quirk over content. That’s not to say his films still aren’t enjoyable, but I haven’t seen one that’s hit me like this one does. Every single time Ben Stiller says “It’s been a rough year, Dad.” I lose it. It’s such a simple and powerful beat.
This is one of the most interesting ensemble casts of any film, and such a dynamic and interesting mix. Gwyneth Paltrow is hilarious and lovely, Ben Stiller is heartbreaking, and Gene Hackman is on the top of his game. This film also features one of the best soundtracks of the last decade or more. If you’ve never seen this film and you like character drama/comedy, for my money - it’s one of the best.

1836 - Iron Man 3
Marvel has really done something quite amazing with the Marvel cinematic universe. If you're a fan of the DC superheroes you can bow in and out of them as you please - like Batman but not Superman - fine - watch one and not the other. But with Marvel, to get the full experience and all the references, you really need to show up each time - especially to get the benefits of the Avengers when they all team up. It turns it into a really interesting and integrated series.
So that brings us to the third (or I suppose 4th) outing for Tony Stark. Tony easily has the most interesting arc of his entire series here. The events of the Avengers fucked him up. Iron Man started off as something very grounded in reality, and so it works nicely that as we expand the Marvel universe we discover other heroes with different powers - Tony is merely a human being, and intelligent one, but just a human. Up to this point he's truly believed that he needs his armour. And that's not untrue. So what's really great about this storyline is that just when Tony needs all his toys the most, he's stripped of them and forced to be enough just as he is. Much like Thor not being able to use his hammer for the majority of that film, Tony doesn't really get his powers back here until he's worthy of them. It's great storytelling. Add to that Shane Black's trademark jaded humour and you've got the kind of summer flick that most should aspire to.
It's hard to imagine and fan of this franchise didn't run out to see this opening weekend, but if not then do so - this could be the best so far - and if you're new to the Marvel universe - start from the beginning. It really is a ride worth taking.
