This film was one of my gaps - and I've got a bunch of other Gilliams that I need to watch at some point. I don't know why but I'd always regarded this as one of those "must see films" and I have absolutely no idea why. Not to say that it isn't any good. It's the story of a Howard Stern-esqe radio guy whose life falls apart after a caller goes off and kills six people, 'causing at least one to go insane and later, ironically, save the said-radio hosts life.
Both Williams and Jeff Bridges are phenomenal here, engaging and dynamic, but I feel like they're doing a lot with a little. I never get a sense of real drama, stakes, or goals for these two guys until perhaps near the end of the film. In the end I suppose it doesn't quite live up to the years-long-hype I've been unfairly giving it. There are some quite lovely moments, and then some that are just pure zaniness under Gilliam's direction. All of which make it more than worth checking out at some point.
the rambling thoughts of a young filmmaker and the discoveries he makes through film, life, and everything in-between...

1310 - World's Greatest Dad

I've wanted to see this film for sometime now. I think that Bobcat is a very interesting storyteller. I haven't seen his very first film, but I enjoyed "Sleeping Dogs Lie" and looked forward to seeing what he would do next. He's really into the darker side of people, and how people deal with that side of themselves. He's not scared of dark subject matter and injects it with the proper amount of heart and indifference. On many levels this film is a wonderful slap in the face in terms of how we glorify the dead mostly just because they're dead. And how it affects us, what we do with it. It's a funny, sad, outrageous, honest film. This isn't laugh-riot Robin Williams, but it also isn't creepy One Hour Photo, Robin Williams. It's just good. Please see this film. And please pay to see it. I want Bobcat to make more films.

1143 - Toys

I think I saw this film as a kid but all I could remember of it was those big green fields. The production design and the inventiveness of it is fantastic. Lots of clever stuff going on. In fact the first half of it is really enjoyable. Lots of quirky little jokes and moments, but then it falls apart right after the mid-point. The world, while ridiculous just sinks into insanity for no real reason. The third act is pretty ludicrous to get right down to it.
So while this film has a lot of fun to it, it's ultimately uneven. Glad I revisited it though since I didn't really remember it.
