I never for a second expected much similarity to the book. So there's that. And, to be honest, given that the book takes place 10 years after the outbreak having it take place during it's inception makes a lot more sense. Also we're so used to zombie stories that take place within small groups of regular people, it's fun to see a globe trotting zombie adventure and a different side of that tale. Everyone's going to have their opinion on the zombies, but I thought they worked well for what they were going for. The chattering teeth one was wonderfully creepy. There's some really fun, smart, inventive things going on here on both sides of it. A zombie action adventure film with a big old heart. I liked it.

1777 - Inglouious Basterds
I haven't watched this film since it was in theatres and for some reason felt compelled to throw it on in the background as I was doing some mindless work. I've been a pretty harsh critic of QT in my recent years and I'm trying to think of why. I think it's because while he makes films that are entertaining as all hell and he's got style coming out the whazu (apologies - I have no idea how to spell whazu - you get the drift) I feel like he's lacking largely in substance. I'd argue that his first two outings had some - there was some moral at the bottom of it all. But his recent films just feel like he's having fun with the medium of film while telling variations on the revenge story - not to being overly critical, but the revenge story is one of the easiest to tell - an audience will always root for someone trying to right a wrong. And there's nothing wrong with that - hell I'm developing one of my own. But it seems to be a like a tad bit of a crutch for QT. This film is full of some really wonderful and clever moments. It's also full of a fair deal of pretension and lingering on moment and shots just because he damn well feels like it. Anything with Christoph Waltz is pretty much amazing, because that's a man that demands attention and Brad Pitt is a shit-tonne of fun here as well.
If you haven't seen this yet, clearly you're not a fan of Quentin Tarantino, so not sure what else there is to say about it. I suppose, at the bottom of it, I'm more curious what the non-die hards think. I find it entertaining, but largely forgetful. No offence QT. I'll still watch every new thing you ever make - but I don't disagree with the comments you've made that state you've only got about 10 films in you - shame is that half of them are the same story.

1636 - Moneyball
So first off, I'm not a sports guy. I don't hate sports, but outside of the odd football and baseball game when I was younger, I don't think I've ever really sat through an entire game. It's just not my thing. I enjoy playing sports. I like watching them live. Something about the sport on television however does absolutely nothing for me. So there's that.
That being said, this was a really enjoying and, hell, riveting film. Pitt is enjoyable, and I'm by no means the first to say this, but he really feels like a Robert Redford here. He's wonderfully charming here, as is Jonah Hill. In a lesser film he would just be the lovable sidekick, but he really brings his own here. I hate to say it but I really don't know what Phillip Seymour Hoffman is going here. Feels like a bit of a waste of a good actor - I assume it's cause he and Miller really liked working together on Capote. Nothing wrong with that. It's not really an actor's film though, mostly just in that there's no real show piece scenes. It's just a really compelling story, which is enough in and of itself. It's no surprise to see Sorkin's name on this, he's a man who really enjoys the behind the scenes of anything, and here it's the background of baseball and trying to figure out a winning formula.
This is the kind of film that's really worth checking out, but once finished you don't really feel like you'll need to revisit. It's more about the outcome, this one. It's actually a great matinee film, I think. Not to downplay it at all. One lovely little surprise was the musical number featuring Kerris Dorsey - I even bought it off of iTunes.
I'm late to this film so I'm sure that everyone who was going to see it has, but I think it's going to be something we see pop it's head back up around award times. If you're even remotely interested in baseball, or like to see the inner workings of things you might want to check this out.

1161 - The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

This is a very peculiar film. It's got all the right technical aspects to it. Deakins shot the shit out of it and it's gorgeous. It's cast is top-notch including roles for people like Mary Louise Parker and Zooey Deschanel, both whom I love, that are mostly wasted in this film. Knowing that there was a four-hour version of this film I can only assume that those talented actresses had more to do at some point.
This film just kind of floats along a bit like a dream, but I'm not quite sure what the point it's trying to make is. It gets lost and a little muddled. It's by no means a bad film, it's just not a great one. It sits in that worth-watching range, on a weekend afternoon. I still prefer Fuller's "I Shot Jesse James" and encourage anyone with an interest in this story to check that out. It's available on DVD now.
Worth the watch, even with a running time near three hours.

1133 - Burn After Reading

I've been excited for this film for quite some time. The story idea sounded wonderful, especially with the promise of the Coen's doing the execution. The early set pictures of Pitt in a bike helmet and suit were confusing in the way that makes you geek-giddy about what it could possibly mean.
I like the Coens. However I also believe that they're the kind of filmmakers who could care less about what their audience wants and expects. They make movies for themselves and if we like them too, that's just icing on their cake. That being said I found myself bored with this. None of the characters were that likable in any way that made me want to root for them. There's some shocks, but they're carefully planted. Sure we get our big starts playing goofy over-the-top characters, but as we learned with their 'The Ladykillers' that doesn't always make for a good film.
A disappointment for sure. I can't even recommend a rental on this unfortunately.
